January 15, 2006

We have had a rather cold and bleak week. Very little sunshine, rain, overcast skies, winds blowing, but we soldier on here in York! At least we don't seem to spend a great deal of time in the elements!!

The week went well, workwise, and on Thursday, I went to lunch with two colleagues from work. We went to the Brigadier Gerard pub for lunch, as it was an easy drive from the office, and we had a good time. Jan and Juliet had not been there, as they both commute to work from out of town. So a good choice and a good time!

On Friday Liz Kirby and Lil Sutton came round for gumbo. This is the gumbo that should have been served last Friday, but Liz got sick! Anyway, Liz and I had not exchanged Christmas presents, and it gave us a chance to do so. I'd also made a shrimp salad, and we had French garlic bread and cheese and fruit for dessert. Richard Kirby, Liz's husband, showed up a bit after 9:30pm. He'd been out with friends in the pubs, and he joined in the wine drinking and the cheese eating, and we all visited and enjoyed each other's company until about 11:30. Then I bade them farewell and got myself ready for bed, after I'd cleaned and straightened things up. How nice to have a dishwasher now to do much of the work for me!!!

Saturday dawned sunny, and I was to meet Teri Rhodes for lunch at Bar 38 prior to our going to the pictures. I went by her parents' stall in the market, and there she was! So, we walked down to Bar 38 together. We had a delicious lunch, and a good catch up conversation. We left there and walked next door to City Screen to get our tickets for Brokeback Mountain, which we had reserved several days ago. When we got into the theatre, we were lucky to get two seats together, and that weren't on the first few rows! The place wound up being completely sold out. It was an excellent movie! We cried, and we talked afterwards how we thoroughly enjoyed it. Afterwards, her boyfriend, Steve, picked us up, and he dropped me off, and I got in my car and drove to the train station to pick up Vincent Lourde, a friend from Toulouse, France who is working in Manchester. We had only recently reconnected, and he was coming over for the evening. I picked him up at the station, and then off we went to La Tasca, a Spanish tapas restaurant. We had a great time, and the food was delicious! We lingered over sangria and enjoyed catching up with each other. Finally, we headed home.

We awoke this morning to fog, and after breakfast, we headed into town, as he'd not been here. He thought York was lovely, and he especially enjoyed the Minster, as there was a service going on, and so we stayed for that, enjoying the choir, organ, etc. A lovely morning and afternoon.

I've just returned from taking him back to the station, and now I write this week's edition to you. Here's hoping none of you had anything untoward happen on Friday 13th, and that all is well with each of you. All the best for the coming week and forever...

Love,

Denny
