It is with sadness that I sit and write this latest update today.

On Saturday morning, I received word that my dear friend, Cleo Pike, had passed away. She'd been in hospital since before Christmas, and she put up a brave fight. I met her and her husband Allen in 1968 when I arrived in Maracaibo, and Terry was in my 7th grade class. Later I would teach Randy as well. I reflect on the good times, the sad times, the happy times we shared down there and afterwards. When I returned to Houston, Allen had passed away, and Cleo and I picked up on our friendship where we'd left off. We'd always stayed in touch, and whenever I'd come to Houston, I'd see the Pikes. We belonged to the same church, and often after church we'd go have beignets and coffee, and we might decide on the spur of the moment to go to a movie. Or one of us might call the other some evening to see what we were doing, and decide to go out to dinner. Or we'd plan evenings to the theatre or concerts, or go tooling around the city doing things. Her friendship means a great deal to me, as does that of the boys. I will miss her terribly, and I know those of you who knew her will as well. I feel fortunate to have had her in my life, and I will always have her in my thoughts.

Cleo Virginia Pike, 76.

The week has been a busy one at work, which is a good thing, since I hate sitting around and watching the second hand go around! Most of the week had clear days, but on Thursday it was forecast that Northern England and Southern Scotland were to have rain, sleet and snow. Well, we got the rain but no sleet or snow. Most everyone was glad, as it was to come in the afternoon, and no one wanted to be driving home in that. I was just as glad, as I'd much prefer for the snow to come on the weekend, when I can enjoy it.

Went out Wednesday to the Red Lion to meet up with friends for a few pints and then home. I was out again on Friday as usual with some friends, and you can tell that everyone is "skint" (broke/low on cash) as the pub was rather quiet. Next Friday is Payday! Saturday I went out looking at more bathroom fittings and then to see "Runaway Jury", which I quite enjoyed. Back home and spent the evening watching telly and reading.

Today I got up and got things straightened up and hung the paintings that I'd mailed back here. It looks better with these up, but I still need to get some more from home, or from somewhere. I also made some taco soup, as it is a cold, rainy day, not one for really going out and doing things. However, Bruce called, and he's made some gumbo; so I am headed over there for dinner to give it a try. I will take them some taco soup for them to try as well.

That's about it from over here. Life goes on, the city is lovely, I enjoy my work and the people, and I feel good. May each of you continue to enjoy life to the fullest.

Love,

Denny
