Our
week started chilly, then it got warmer, then chillier, then bright
blue skies, then some rain, then blue skies again! We had a variety
of weather, but none of it really spring. Granted, we got above freezing
for a bit, but then down we went again. In fact, one weather report
said there was a slight possibility of snow in Northern England this
coming week! So, maybe spring has not sprung yet.
We had a good week at work, and everyone was looking forward to Red
Nose Day, which was Friday and the culmination of Comic
Relief. There had been a number of activities going on
in schools, communities, etc., and for three weeks on TV we'd had
“Comic Relief Does Fame Academy” where famous
people here in Britain did Fame
Academy for Comic Relief. It was
a good show, and of course, I was voting for my favorite (who didn't
win, by the way. I was for Debra
from Coronation
Street, a soap here).
Friday dawned, and I'd decided that I was going to go as some sort
of clown. I put on my trousers, then a pair of shorts that were too
big for me being held up by suspenders, a longsleeve shirt covered
by a short sleeved red pullover shirt, topped off by this big hat
with horns on it. Then Lil Sutton painted my face when I got to work,
and was I ever stunning! You can see in the pictures on the left just
how lovely I was. I stood downstairs waiting for Steve Cartwright
to pick me up, and received a number of interesting looks. He arrived
wearing his very curly red wig. We were a lovely sight, I am sure,
to passers-by. I was off to acupuncture on Friday, and when I returned,
here came Anne Brockett with a bottle of red wine for me. Thanks to
Steve Cartwright, who'd been around to take photos, she'd judged me
as comical as Karen Wyrill in her clown costume (face it, Karen is
the best, hands down!), and was I ever surprised. I'd definitely decided
that I would get in costume, as we were supposed to be in something
to do with the theme of the day. Many people wore the red noses, painted
faces, hair, etc. Nikki Laube and Teri Rhodes did a sponsored Silence
Day for Comic Relief (and was their department ever happy for
it!), and none of us thought they'd last the whole day, but they did.
It was a fun day, and of course, we all contributed to Comic
Relief. Needless to say, I came home and got to work scrubbing
my face and getting out of those clothes. I don't know how much was
raised, but from 7pm until I went to sleep about 11pm, over £40,000,000
had been raised. Good going!!
On Saturday I was up and walked into town, stopping by to see Teri's
mum who has a stall in the Newgate
Market, then on to the post office, over to the Theatre
Royal to pick up ballet tickets I'd purchased for Erik Osterrieder,
John Maio and I for when they will be here in April, then back to
the market to do some veggie shopping, then home. I got everything
unloaded, and then I was off to the movie to see “Hitch”.
It was a fun and enjoyable movie. Afterwards, I came home and just
watched TV.
Today was another lovely day, and I got up and did some things around
here, and then set off on the train to Poppleton.
I was going to see John Coulson and Kate Addy's new home. It's only
a 5 minute journey or so on the train, and when I got off, there was
John and Kate, and surprise (!) Paula Downing and Nigel Naylor. They'd
been over the night before and gone for an Italian meal and just stayed
over. We had a good day of it, and the home is lovely! Kate fixed
bangers
and mash, and a lovely rasberry
crumble with custard. Ummmm...good! A bit of wine was consumed,
and finally, Paula, Nigel and I got a taxi back into York. Another
good time with good friends, good food, good conversation. A great
day!
I hope all is well with you all, and that you, too, had a good week.
Love,
