First
of all, HAPPY EASTER
to you all! I hope that it has been a wonderful day for
each of you, it has been for me.
Secondly, I have a new email address:
I had changed
Internet servers a week ago this past Wednesday, but I couldn't
get it to connect; thus no update last Sunday. However,
I finally got someone to come over and get it all sorted
for me, and now I am back among those connected to the world.
Thanks for your patience!! So this update will go back two
weeks.
The week started out fine enough, what with work, the weather
was blustery, and I had worked late on Monday. On Tuesday
I had gone to acupuncture, and then there was a resident's
association meeting here in the building. Wednesday, I went
to work, and about 9:10am the fire alarm came on. Out we
all trooped. One of the workmen (they are remodeling the
5th floor) came out to tell us not to worry, to go back
in. Back in we trooped. I got to my desk and found water
coming down on my printer from the ceiling! I shouted out
and got it moved, and others began to check their areas.
Sure enough, it was coming down by some filing cabinets.
We got those moved. Someone opened the door to the hall
that goes to the restrooms, and the water was deep in the
restrooms! Another yelp, and we helped others move their
desks, as the water was coming onto their computers! Large
bins and buckets were quickly made available, our kitchen
up on the first floor was swamped, and then we heard that
the ground floor offices were also affected. The lights
had gone off, and we were working with emergency lighting
to get things cleared out of harm's way.
Eventually, all was done, and we were told to evacuate.
We went outside and waited about 45 minutes, and then we
were told to head to the Novotel.
We all trooped there, along with some of the residents.
In talking with them, we discovered that one of the workers
had been cutting a timber support beam when it fell and
hit and broke one of the pipes on a water main. Needless
to say, those apartments on the 4th floor were the worst
hit. The company doing the building was keeping us updated,
and they told us they would have a buffet lunch for us a
bit after 12. We still didn't know if they would be able
to get us back to work. Sure enough, they let us know before
lunch that electricians and health and safety officers had
been in, checked all work stations and given us a go signal
to work at 1pm. We had our lunch and then went to work.
What a mess, but not as bad as it could have been. That
company really pulled out all the stops and got us sorted.
They also provided rooms for those here whose apartments
had been affected, and some are still in them, with all
bills being charged to that company.
The rest of the week continued, and then it was the weekend.
Most everyone was so tired, we just all headed home, thankful
that we had the weekend to recuperate!!
I didn't do much at all that weekend! I just seemed drained!
Granted, my new Internet service had come online on Wednesday,
but I'd worked late to catch up on work missed that morning,
as had others, and by the time I got home, I just didn't
feel like facing that task of connecting. Thursday evening
a friend had come over to try to get it sorted out, to no
avail. Friday two friends came over and gave it a go, but
nothing. Thus, no connection for the weekly update, or anything
else for that matter.
On Monday a guy said he'd come by when I called a company
about coming out. He'd be here shortly after 5. Well, I
waited outside for him until 5:40pm, but he never showed!
When I called the next day, his co-worker said he'd had
another call and couldn't make it. Why didn't he call me
and say so?!!! So I called another company on Tuesday, and
they said a guy would be here. Sure enough, he was here
on time, got it all sorted out, and at last, I was connected.
However, I had to go to another Residents' Meeting and didn't
get home til after 10pm.
Work continued for the rest of the week, and we are sort
of settled in with the way things are for a bit. Our kitchen
has been torn out, the bathrooms are ok for now, but will
be redone, equipment has been replaced, but carpeting will
need to be replaced, painting, etc. It all takes time!
On Thursday Lil Sutton and I headed to the Rose
and Crown for lunch. It was nice, as Thursday
was our last day this past week. We are off Good Friday
and “Easter
Monday”; so a 4-day weekend!
On Thursday after work I went to the Slug
and Lettuce to meet up with Paula Downing.
She and her partner, Nigel Naylor, had been to the Maldives
for two weeks, and I'd not had the chance to catch up with
them since their return. We had a nice visit, a few pints,
and then I took her home and headed home myself.
On Friday I was up and out to get my car washed, off to
ASDA
to do some shopping, then I went into town to get a jacket
repaired. The shop was across the street from my hairdresser's
shop, and when I came out, he came out! He asked what I
was doing, and would I like to meet him and Louise at The
Three Tuns for a couple. SURE! Frozen
food could wait! As always, we had a good visit, and after
a couple I had to say goodbye and get home! I had things
to get in the freezer!!! A bit before 6pm I headed to Rustique
Restaurant to meet Teri Rhodes, Dana Dennis
and Pam Powell. We had a good meal, and we chatted about
our impending trip to Barcelona.
We are all so excited about it. Afterwards, we walked around
the corner to the Hilton
Hotel for a nightcap and then headed home.
On Saturday I was in town and in and out of the shops, at
the craft market in the market area, and visiting with Teri
and Bess at their stall in Newgate
Market. I wandered a number of the streets, bought a
few things, and then I headed home. I had to get things
sorted for today!
Today I was up early and off to church. After Easter services,
I went and met Chris and Gill Barker for brunch at Slug
& Lettuce, and Gill and I had Eggs
Benedict. We all allowed as this place is probably the
only one that does make Eggs Benedict in York! Afterwards
I came home. The night before, some late night revelers
had been outside the building on the bridge over the River
Foss and been playing guitar and banjo and singing at
3:45am. I had called the police, but they got here too late,
as they had dispersed by them. THEN the damn Canadian
Geese had started quacking (it's mating season), and
I wondered if I'd ever get back to sleep. SO, I decided
to have a “siesta”. So, I've just awakened from
my snooze, feeling MUCH better and not as sleepy as before
so I could write this update for you all.
Again, have a lovely Easter. It has been a glorious weekend
here in York, sun shining, a bit of a breeze, but oh, so
lovely! Hope all are well.
Love,
