Well,
it was a good week at work.
Being the first complete
week we had worked there, since we started back on a Tuesday after
being off on Monday for Easter, by now we have more or less found
where everything is, know our way around, etc. We have also discovered
the shops and pubs for lunch, i.e. the sandwich shop, the pubs that
do lunch, the fish and chip shop that is open during lunchtime on
Friday, etc. So life is good!
On Friday I walked over to my doctors' office to drop off my prescriptions
for a refill. Yes, that's the way it is done here. You take the refill
prescription back to the doctor's office, and it is ready in 2 working
days. Then, since I have a certain service with Boots
the Chemist, I let Boots
know when it will be ready. They contact the office to make sure,
and then they collect it. THEN, it is ready the next day! So as you
can see, certainly not as simple and efficient as leaving it at the
pharmacy and calling when you need the refill! But it works, and that's
the good thing. Anyway, it was such a lovely day that I decided I
would just walk from there along the River
Ouse to work. What a lovely walk it is! Now, I had no idea where
it was that I needed to turn up to go to our office, but I asked a
lady along the way if she knew where Hospital Fields Road was. She
said, "Oh you can't miss it. Just go on up and you will see where
this area widens, and there is a big field. You will see some brightly
colored things where you can lock up bicycles, and just past that
is where you turn to the left." Well, I walked and walked, and
I saw the Millenium
Bridge coming into site. As I approached it, Michelle Stott came
off it and said to me, "Darling, if you are going to Bishp Thorpe,
you are headed in the right direction, but if you want to go into
work, turn around and come with me!" So of course I turned around,
and I pointed out about the lady telling me about the brightly colored
things for chaining up bicycles. I told her I'd not seen them, and
she pointed and said, "Denny this is York. Those things painted
silver ARE brightly colored for here!" We had a good laugh as
we walked the couple of blocks to the office. The day was going just
fine until I had a call from my plumber.
Now, he and his crew
were to finally start on Saturday to redo the bathroom. He said he
had some bad news: the bathtub I want comes from Scotland (who knew??),
and although he claims he told them he wanted one, there were none
in stock! They won't have one ready until May 10!!! So what are you
going to do??? I just expressed my displeasure with this, but they
are coming this coming weekend to put in the new ceiling and lights,
and to take off the tiles, and on the 10th the bath will be fitted!
Fingers crossed all goes according to plan.
After work, Paul Cain, Mike Kendall, Karen Whiteley, Chris Thompson
and I set off for The
Light Horseman pub. We'd not been there very long
when Richard Kirby arrived, and then here came Bruce Corrie. Next
Rachel Addison arrived! Tjhen here came more Corries
people! We had a few pints there, then it was on day the road to Wetherspoons,
where we found even MORE folks from work, as well as Chris' wife,
Fiona. We all had a very good time, and then I finally wandered home
in a taxi, and sent him back to pick up Bruce, Richard and Liz Kirby
and Nathan.
Saturday found me not feeling in top form, but I got up as I had an
appointment to get my hair cut at Lawton Henry's.
We had a nice visit, and then I went across the street to Jenny's
to have a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, which made me feel much
better. I took care of some things in town and then walked back home
and had a quiet day.
Sunday I was up early as Chris Thompson had invited me to come watch
him play darts. He is one of the top darts players in the UK, and
he was the outstanding darts person in February, and featured on the
cover of the darts magazine here in the UK. He's sponsored by Corries,
and I said of course I would come. Having never been to a darts tournament,
I had no idea what to expect. I met up with Fiona and he and others
at 8:30am, and we set off in a minibus for Hemsworth where the tournament
would be held. It was the British Inter-County Tournament,
and it was the great rivalry between Lancashire and York, the Red
Rose versus the White Rose. Well, it came down to the last two players,
and the White Rose won, 7-5! Talk about cheering and singing! Queen's
"We
Are The Champions" was played, and we were all standing
and holding hands in the air and singing along. It was a wonderful
experience! Now this was around 5:30pm. From there we went to Conisburg
for a party for the Yorkshire team and friends, and nothing do but
Chris wanted me to have my picture taken with the trophy! You all
know how shy and retiring I am, and I jumped at the chance. It's enormous!
Over 3 feet high! Well, lots of celebrating, and I finally arrived
home about 10:15pm. What a wonderful experience!
So that's this past week. Let's see what next week will bring!! Enjoy!
Love,
