Journal Entry: May 3, 2004

Our week started off beautiful, weatherwise, but degenerated as the week continued. By Monday afternoon, it had turned cold, cloudy and rainy. It continued this way until Friday afternoon, when it became sunny, with fluffy clouds, and everyone had fingers crossed the weather would hold, as Monday is a holiday, May Day.

On Wednesday after work I helped Bruce to sort out the pictures that will be hung throughout the building. We had a good time sorting through and deciding what will stay and what will go, as some of the old pictures that were in the former offices just don't go with our new environment. Then we tackled the reception area, and I gave him some ideas on how to make it look smashing! So guess who is now in charge of getting all this done??? ME! We then retired to The Light Horseman for a few pints and then home for the evening.

On Friday, Chris Thompson came up with the photos of the darts tournament, and everyone gathered round to see them. There was much talk about the size of the trophy, surroundings, etc., and Chris and I were reliving the event for them. What with the weather turning so lovely, again a group of us headed to The Light Horseman for a few: Karen Whiteley, Richard and Liz Kirby, Mike Kendall and me. From there we walked to The Edinburgh Arms for a couple of games of pool, and then we headed back inside the walls. The rest were going to Wetherspoons, but I continued on to the Red Lion and meeting up with Paula Downing. We'd not seen each other for a bit; so we had some catching up to do. In a little bit, here came the rest of the crew from Wetherspoons, and so we all had more of visit. After awhile, Paula and I set off in a taxi for our homes.

Saturday dawned gorgeous, and the workmen were to come and start on the bathroom.... FINALLY!!! So, I was all ready for them at 8:30, but of course, they didn't show up until nearly 10. Stuff was moved in, taken apart, etc., and work began. I walked into town to pick up my prescriptions, do a bit of shopping, etc., and then came back. They worked on the electrics (my "sparky" [name for an electrician here] was here) as well as on lowering the ceiling a couple of inches for the recessed lighting. That seemed to take up most of the morning and a great deal of the afternoon, what with a couple of tea breaks and a lunch break. Finally, they got done what they came to do, I guess, cleaned things up and left, with the ceiling man saying that he would be back Saturday morning at 9:30 to do the plastering and skimming of the new ceiling. So what with the majority of the day gone now, I just stayed in.

Sunday was another beautiful day, and I arose to prepare for the ceiling guy to return. I waited. And waited. And waited some more. I finally called the plumber, who is in charge of all this work, and told him that he had not appeared. He called me back a bit later to say that the guy's truck had broken down, but he would be here today at 9:30. So here I was, no plans, feeling sorry for myself and angry that this workman had not shown up when Bruce calls. He had purchased a new barbeque grill and wanted to break it in, and would I like to come for a barbeque? OF COURSE!! I got ready and made my way there. Sally and he were in the garden, and we relaxed there for a bit, talking. Then Bruce and I went to the market in his new car. Now, he has a BMW X6 (4x4) that is less than a year old, Sally has a new Saab convertible he got her for Christmas, and on Friday he took delivery of a BMW convertible. Naturally, we went in it to the market! Very nice! We bought all the stuff for the barbeque and returned home. He got the grill going, and Sally made a pitcher of Pimms Cups. Now, I'd always considered that to be a rather bland drink, but hers were quite good! So we sat in the garden enjoying our Pimms and had a delightful meal. Afterwards, we retired to the living room to watch the final episodes of a BBC program on TV that we had all been watching, and then I wended my way home about midnight. THAT's the reason this episode is a day late.

Today is the holiday, May Day, and here I sit still waiting for the ceiling man! It's 10:15am, and no sign of him. When I finish here, I am giving a call to the plumber. They are probably going to regret having taken on this job, what with me complaining. As my British friends say, they grumble and moan while Americans complain! So many have said they are going to do more complaining, since they realize the moaning does no good, while the complaining does! Have to stay on these people! Hopefully, he will turn up, and soon, as I am meeting my friends Dana and Pam for lunch today here in York.

So here is another chapter in my life in York. Have a great week, everybody!

Love,

Denny
