June 24, 2007

What a a week! It's been hot and muggy, there's been rain and a few cool spells, but by and large a humid week!

Tuesday I was off to acupuncture, and that was good, as always. It's amazing how much help they are able to do for me.

On Thursday evening, I met up with Peter Gibson and Teri Rhodes. We met at Plonkers for a drink, and then we crossed the street to go to Silvano's Ristorante. We were celebrating Peter's birthday, which was in May, but he'd been off to the US, and it was our first time to catch up with him. He regaled us all about their trip in upper class on Virgin Atlantic Airlines, the time in New York City, and the return on the Queen Mary 2. What a wonderful time they had!

Teri then told us about her father's experience with getting lunch reservations at Royal Ascot. They had a horse running this past Saturday, Knot In Wood (unfortunately, it didn't win), and he'd chartered a plane to fly him and his wife, his brother and his wife down there. Well, he decided, as it was a once-in-a-lifetime to have a horse he owned entered at Royal Ascot, he'd book a table for the 4 of them a pay for lunch in a special place there. He called, and he'd planned to spend £1000. The lady told him it was £1200, and he said fine, he'd take the table for £1200. She said, no sir, it's £1200 EACH (that's about $2400 each!!!). He told her thanks but no thanks! What can one eat and drink that would be worth £1200 per person, and champagne was free! We all gasped and had a good laugh over that one!

On Friday after work, Margaret and John Walker, Richard Bowie, Jane Greenall, Lil Sutton and I were out to celebrat Tracey Riby's passing the last exam to become qualified as a solicitor! At last, she can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We started at The Spread Eagle, which has had quite a bit of a sprucing up with the addition of a beer garden and aviary in the back, with tables and umbrellas. There are plans to redo the inside, move the bar, etc. Quite industrious!

From there wandered on down Walmgate to El Gaucho Argentine restaurant and had a delicious meal. Everyone remarked how good it was! Afterwards we continued our stroll on Walmgate stopping at the Five Lions Pub for another drink. I had one and then bid the others goodnight and headed back home.

Saturday I was up early and got my car washed, then it was off to ASDA to fill up the car, buy groceries, get prescriptions refilled, etc. From there I went back home and unloaded things. I then headed into town to Newgate Market where Teri Rhodes told me her parents had just called and had arrived safely at Ascot. I went and placed my bet on Knot In Wood (have to support friends, right?), then went down Walmgate to get my hair cut at Lawton Henry's. From there it was off to The Grand Opera House to bood tickets for the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, which will be playing when Arliss Watson is here, and then over to York Theatre Royal, where I purchased ticket for The Bouncers, also while she is here. By now it's after 2:30, and I trudged home, and by the time I got there, my feet were killing me.

Today I was up and off to Central Methodist for church. After church, I came home, did my ironing, did a wash, got things straightened up, etc. About 6pm, my friend Donna Gale called. She'd told me to keep Sunday evening free, as she was taking me to dinner. She'd decided we'd go to Siam House. Great! One of my neighbors, Victoria and Tim, own it, and they were there, and we had a wonderful time. Afterwards, I dropped her off and headed back home to write this entry to the continuing missive of my time in York.

So, hope all is good with each of you.

Love,

Denny
